Acne and Wrinkles: How Vitamin A Tackles Both

Acne and wrinkles are two inevitable fights many of us will experience at some point in our lives.

Acne is often turbulent during puberty, and then stabilizes itself in the years to come. However, adult acne is fast becoming the leading skin complaint for over thirties due to hormones, what we consume, and how we take care of our skin.

At the same time, ageing is an equally big skin concern at our age. Many of my customers are concerned about using anti-ageing products on their skin to diminish evident signs of aging, like fine lines and wrinkles, in fear of triggering more acne outbreaks.

While acne and wrinkles don’t seem interrelated, efforts can thankfully be made to battle both at the same time. The secret weapon to healthy, acne-free, and wrinkle-free skin? Vitamin A.

Vitamin A includes protective and nourishing properties that support your skin to keep it healthy, radiant, and firm. Unlike many other nutrients, vitamin A consists of a group of compounds – retinal, retinol and retinoic acid.

These vitamin A derivatives have been proven to fight fine lines and acne. Here’s how:

1) Vitamin A boosts collagen production. When collagen becomes damaged due to UV exposure and other aggressors, wrinkles begin to develop Retinoids, “turn on” cells, responsible for making new collagen, strengthening your skin and filling in fine lines below the surface, resulting in smoother looking skin.

2) Vitamin A helps unclog pores. Pimples form when pores are clogged with dead skin cells, bacteria and oil, providing the perfect breeding ground for the common bacterias responsible for blemishes.

When vitamin A skincare products stimulate cell turnover the same process happens within the pores themselves, helping to slow oil production and keep pores clear. In the late 1960s, Albert Kligman, M.D., Ph.D., a dermatologist at the University of Pennsylvania, started testing a Vitamin A derivative called tretinoin on acne patients. By 1973, Kligman patented his formula for the first-ever effective acne treatment – Retin-A,

About twelve years later, Kligman noticed Retin-A’s other beneficial effects: decreasing wrinkles and smoothing skin tones. Kligman secured another set of patents, and the rest of the cosmetic industry soon followed with an abundance of anti-wrinkle retinoid treatments.
